From Jessica:

Hi there, I have really enjoyed reading your blog. You have tons of great information and I love how honest you are. πŸ™‚ I am thinking about starting the program but the cost is just killing it for me. Then I noticed you mentioned the tax write off, and you will be at $8000. I’m just wondering how that works. I may be able to justify this to my husband if that is the case. Thank you so much for your time!!

From April:

Hi Jessica! Thanks for reading and passing along that compliment! I have really enjoy writing about this journey…it helps me figure it all out without killing those closets to me! πŸ™‚ GREAT question and concern. The 30/10 program is TAX DEDUCTIBLE! Because it is a “medical program” developed and overseen by doctors you can write all all non-food expensive! So for 15 weeks my cost was $3600. I get to deduct around $2800 for my 15 weeks of being on the plan. I will be doing the plan for a total of 37 weeks- that was what my coach estimated would be the amount of time for me to release 100 pounds. This means that my upfront costs will be around $10,000 which is a TON of money. This is all not “due” at once. You pay half of up front then the rest at a later date. It is also the starting price for gastric bypass surgery…not to mention all of the pre-work that Washington State providers require (medical screenings, 6 months of working with other weight loss programs like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, counseling…the list is LONG) OR the post-op medical attention, care, and counseling. I am insured through Premera and when I was inquiring about gastric surgery options they estimated that my OUT OF COST expenses over the next 3 years would be $15,000…IF everything went perfectly. There are a few things in that situation that scare me. Nothing ever goes right in my world so my out of cost would be through the roof. Medically changing my insides for ever did not sound appealing. 3 YEARS of pre and post recovery? That was just TOO much time I do not have to dedicate to releasing my weight. My husband and I want to start a family next year so I had to get my weight off NOW! Long story short, over 37 weeks we will spend $10,000 on 30/10. I will have released 100 pounds to the universe never to see these bones again. I will get to deduct around $8000 for medical expenses JUST from the 30/10 program. I am assuming 30/10 provides you with documentation for your costs when you ask for it. I just have not gotten that far yet! But a large part of it IS tax deductible that I know for sure!

Another thing to think about here is your timeframe. How much do you want or need to lose? 30/10 stands for 30 pounds in 10 weeks. If you follow the program to a T this IS how much you will lose. It just works. My costs are SO high because I have A LOT of weight to lose and I am still eating a TON of food. I am eating 5-6 of their food items a day and that costs more money. I have known people who have had less weight to lose and their costs are much lower than mine. To TRULY get your costs you HAVE to go in for a consultation-CALL ahead and make that consultation appointment. If you just drop into one of their offices they will not have to time to answer your questions fully. At your consultation they will give your all your health numbers, talk about the program in DEPTH, and give your your true costs. Because you know me now and you tell them that April Williams referred you, your consultation fee is $25. BEST $25 I EVER SPENT! I got to see my weight, fat ratios, BMI, water weight, muscle and skeleton mass…numbers that solidified the fact that I was OBESE and was going to die if I continued my lifestyle. It was VERY difficult to see those numbers exposed to the “public” but it was what needed to happen. Even if you end up not signing up…you are now armed with your own numbers and that is powerful.

When my coach pointed out that fact that I was ALREADY spending the $3600 in three months (15 weeks…3.5 months) on food and food-related things it made the cost not so steep. We were spending $400-600 just at the grocery store ever month. I was spending $200 a month at Starbucks. We spend $400 a month eating out…another $200 on drinks with friends and random food purchases. I was also spending $200 a month in co-pays for my medical issues…think of the gas and time you are also spending to get there! When I got honest with my spending habits the choice was easy for me and my husband. On the program, you will be providing your own on-plan veggies for lunch and you are cooking your own meals ever dinner. So you will still be spending money every month on those items. Now we only spend about $300 a month on any food items. I buy most meats at Costco in bulk and my veggies at Trader Joes. I can now walk out of TJ’s only spending $50 for veggies that last TWO weeks with myself and my husband! $200 a month at Costco for our meats and bigger items that I eat ever day like lettuce and spinach. I buy whole chickens, chicken breasts, some fish, pork roasts and shoulders and cook them up in big batches to enjoy all week! And all the items that were costing us the most- the junk and crap that is not really food, you no longer purchase. No pop, no chips, no quick and easy convenience foods. There is limited eating out for us just because it can be a challenge eating out for me…NOT because of the menu but because of my will power to say no to what I want to eat! In our home we have come out in the black. We are spending WAY less on food and food related items. I still enjoy Starbucks (Venti Iced Green Tea with 1 Splenda!) but maybe once a week now…I can come out of Trader Joes unphased by all the goodies that line every shelf of that place…and I do not miss the booze at all. Dining out is still a struggle and we almost never do it. But that is only temporary…not forever…only 37 weeks for me which is a school year! If I can make it through a school year without murdering children- I am a high school teacher- I can CERTAINLY do this and YOU CAN TO!

My last observation: 30/10 is HARD. It is EXPENSIVE. I have a pattern of committing to something (a weight loss routine or a new fangled gym) only to give up the ghost about 3 or 4 weeks into it. My husband and I talked at LENGTH about my pattern and how this would be the most EXPENSIVE “fling” we have done as a couple. I could NOT waste this money. I HAD to commit to the program and do it with fidelity and honesty. 30/10 does NOT work if you cheat. You HAVE to follow their strict guidelines. You just have to do it. And after day 1 that can seem impossible. It was PAINFUL for the first two weeks of the program. I really was thinking “What the hell did I do here? I can’t do this…why did I agree to this? Nobody said it would be this hard…” and all kinds of similar thoughts. 30/10 is not a “well lets try it and see” kinda thing. It requires 100% commitment and dedication from day 1 and is unrelenting through the whole program. If you ask yourself “Am I really ready to do this for my life? Am I really ready to truly change my relationship with food and my body” and you hesitate in your response, do not sign up. You are not ready. I was at the end of my rope. I had hit rock bottom. I had tried every program, every diet, ever gym, every ________ and come up goose eggs. I had tried them with fidelity too. I have DONE them. Nothing worked. I lost maybe 20 pounds at most with Weight Watchers and stopped counting points and gained it all back then some. I was DONE. I was tired and fed up of not being happy with my weight or the way my body looked and felt on my bones. I was ready for 30/10. Are you READY?

My biggest fear with losing weight had to do with my relationships with myself and others. If I lost the weight, would be I the same person? Will my personality change? Will people still like me when I look different? What if I act different? Will I still be fun and outgoing? Will I like to do the same things? Will my husband still be attracted to me? He fell in love with me looking the way I did…fluffy and obese…how would he react to a smaller me? Sounds weird but those were my concerns. Some valid…some just outs for me to not do the work. I shared these deep dark concerns with my husband and a woman who had successfully done 30/10…Lori. Sweet wonderful amazing Lori. We both started crying on the phone…she had the EXACT same fears as I had. She assured me that SHE had remained the same person…her personality had NOT changed…she enjoyed the same things and had the same friends. How she interacted with them changed but she enjoyed her time with them MORE because it was no longer centered around food…it was centered around their relationship. Lori had released the weight and was the same person. She had not changed. That was a HUGE relief for me. I signed up for 30/10 the very next day…Lori provided me with the answers I was seeking. Longer story short- it is expensive. Money is tight. But your life and your happiness and your health are worth more than all the money you and your husband will make in your entires lives combined. The money will come and go, your health or lack there of will end your life early. Those be the facts. Is your life worth the cost of 30/10? Was MY life worth $3600? Worth $10,000? Um…YES. My life is priceless and so is yours. Who cares what the cost is in the end.

I hope this helps in your journey for a decision! Sorry it ended up being so long!

    1. Thank you Jessica for the awesome compliment and great question! I JUST answered it above! I ended up writing a novella…sorry ’bout that. Please continue to ask question as you have them! 30/10 has been THE ONE for me and am SO HAPPY if I can help others find it as well! Or find something else that works for them…I just want us all to be happy, healthy, and lighter πŸ™‚

    1. Sorry I hit “Send” by accident! So there are many different food options that 30/10 provides. Breakfast choices include cereal, oatmeal, omelet, or fruit flavored shaker bottle. Lunch options include soups of all kinds, a pasta option or two, sloppy joys, or vegetable chili. All of the 30/10 items are basically interchangeable so you can have what ever you want for breakfast and lunch. Dinner is 6-8 ox of lean protein depending on your program, 2 cups of veggies, and 2 cups of a green salad. NO fruit, some veggies are off the table, no alcohol, no sweetened beverages, no added sugar. It seems very restrictive at first and it kind of is. But its OK! You will be doing it for a short amount of time and after the first 2-3 weeks you really wont be missing any of the foods that are off plan! The biggest thing with 30/10 is that you HAVE to stick to the program 100%. As soon as your deviate you have thrown your whole week off. They will explain all of this when you have you consultation. You CAN do it!

  5. I’ve been doing 30/10 for 2 weeks. I’ve lost 9 lbs and have 5-10 to go… But I MISS food. I miss the variety. I’m at a point where I start to eat my salad with 2 cups of veggies and want to vomit. I’m so tempted to say screw it.

  6. I went in for my consultation yesterday; I’m so anxious to lose weight but I was surprised at how much you’re paying for the support. For me they suggested 17 weeks which equals $3525.00. With a few other options it was anywhere from 17.98 – 20.14 dollars per day. (That’s actually not that bad but the sticker shock was real indicating that I was required to put 1/2 down – that’s $1762.50 and then 125.89 per week). I work for a school district and I get paid monthly – there is no way that I would be able to pull that off.
    I was so disheartened.
And then I saw their food – WHAT??!! 12 boxes of various kinds of soup, powder eggs, and oatmeal. My disappointment deepened.
I think, based on what I know about how the program works – I will make my list of edibles and go to the supermarket – I think I can eat pretty good on less than half of what I would be paying 30/10 per day on healthy, low-carb alternatives.
30/10, as well as Pinterest and anywhere else on the web, has thousands of low/no carb – high protein recipes. I will follow the “30/10” model and rid my home of all of the “bad” foods and eat minimally but include tons of protein, lots of vegetables, very little fat, and few if any carbs. I will be missing out on the “5-7 minutes with a coach each week” (verbatim) and the weigh-ins but I think if I track my consumption and progress and rely on my family for moral support, I can do this.
April – I appreciate this blog as I felt the ‘real-ness’ and your descriptions are spot on with how you feel on diets, I will just expect to be hungry and grumpy for the first 1.5 – 3 weeks (and my family is prepared as they know how I am when I’m hungry).
Good luck to all who have the means to utilize the 30/10 program and to you, April, and to all of those who don’t have the means – do your research and power through. I have faith in myself and I have faith in you!

  7. I go to the Seattle Belltown 3010. I’ve been on 3010 for 3 weeks, and am losing weight, and googled 3010 to try to find a link to their subtle hypnosis-subliminal message support tapes that I listen to each week, but am surprised to not read anything about them or the vibration-machine that I stand on for 10 minutes each week before my weigh in.
Are these options at each center? Do you know the maker of the tapes? I’d like to find them to be able to listen more often.

    1. I think it DOES vary by location. At Tacoma they have the vibrating machine and the tapes with super comfortable chairs and blankets πŸ™‚ The tapes are by Dr. Patrick Porter and the app is called PorterVision. You pay a monthly subscription fee to access them through the app or I think you can just buy them all from his website.

  8. Hi April
I am wondering if you are still on this plan and doing well with it. I’m seriously giving thought to calling them but for some od reason, I’ve held back. I’d like to know if you feel like you’re satisfied with the eating plan, not ravishingly hungry, and how your energy level has been.
    Thank you

    1. Hi Jana! I am still following the plans maintainence guidelines and doing pretty good. I have found some of the released weight but am slowly losing it again. Any program works if you follow it and I have tried and done them all. 30/10 works wonderfully for me. The program is HARD but it’s healthy and helps you drop the weight faster than any other. There support is wonderful and always there. I was very hungry my first two weeks but that was my brain and addiction, not my actual hunger levels. Energy for me was VERY high on program. I think you should go in for a consultation! Where would your home location be? Let them n ow that you know me- April and it should be just $25! There is no pressure to sign up and you will get some great j do about your body! JUST DO IT! Keep us posted here about your progress!

  9. Thanks April for the quick response! I have to say I’m concerned about the cost, dumping the weight and then regaining it but it may be worth the risk. I’m in the Tacoma area so I think that location would be where I’d schedule. Honestly, I’m not digging thought of giving up my hard earned cash lol and may do a little more research. Love your blog and have totally appreciated all it has to offer! D

    1. Thanks Jana! It’s worth the $25 just to learn about the program AND what you will learn about your body and numbers. The money was motivation to stay on plan and to not go backwards. I think after you have a consultation you will have all the info you need to make a decision!

I have done heaps of research and am ready to make an appointment with the Everett office…just curious what happened and if I should make the appointment or not.

        1. Hi Trevor! As I am writing this response I am enjoying my 30/10 approved lunch πŸ™‚ I am not on plan at the moment. On plan for me means ON PLAN-FOLLOWING TO THE LETTER. I got off track for lots of reasons- I was mad/angry/sad/stressed/tired/done/annoyed…you pick the word. 30/10 WORKS. The program and education is amazing. I battle an addiction and have just not yet found a lasting cure for it. I work on it every day- I make better food choices most of the time, I stop eating when I am full, I just don’t drink like I used to, I eat lots of green things often…so the program has helped me make those life long changes and I am beyond thankful for that. I think you should make the appointment. I think you should go and just feel it out. I too am feelings things out on my end and will start writing again soon. It’s time πŸ™‚
